The marking of streets, squares, waterfronts, bridges, parks, orchards and other public spaces serves mainly to orientate the city and to facilitate identification by the public administration. Streets (i.e. local roads, especially of the urban type) are marked with names in the Czech Republic and other European countries. The oldest local names in Prague date back to the 11th-12th centuries. There are rules for naming streets, and there are also rules for how street signs should look in Prague.
